Chapter 6: Uncanny Resemblance (3)
When I questioned him, John answered a couple times with a cough.
“The filthy clothes is gone… No longer recognizable.”
His tone was horribly cold yet it was filled with a sense of longing. I wondered why. I wanted to reply but I answered only with an awkward laugh instead.
“Yes, the beggar will sit down.”
Once again, you should never call me a beggar and expect me to hold back. Looking at a glimpse of John’s face, I saw that he was frowning violently, as if my answer had been harsh. I sat on the sofa opposite John.
“I’ve given it some thought while you were cleaning yourself.”
“I told you I’d give you a job. I’ve been thinking about what to give you.”
Work. I was actually looking for work? What if I worked here?
“Josh is …. Oh, I mean, the handsome boy–his name is Joshua Lancaster. As you may have guessed, he is my son. Josh is very stubborn. Do you know who you look like?”
To resemble someone that looks like you… Huh… I remembered the conversation John and the boy had on the roadside.
While I was thinking about it, John continued.
“If I drive you away, I’m sure Josh will give me a lot of trouble. No, it is a lot of trouble. He’ll have me going out every day to find you for sure.”
“So I thought, “Why don’t you work as Joshua’s nanny at this mansion for a while?” That’s what I thought.”
Nanny? Never done it, but I don’t think it would be difficult. Taking care of a cute child like Joshua would be fun. What’s more, if I work as a nanny here, don’t you think I’ll have all the accommodations?
Well, thank you very much!
I had already decided to work as a nanny, but I pretended to be in deep thought… Because I wanted to get this job to my advantage.
John, who saw the light of agony from me, offered me a condition with a very disinclined look
“A few years enough to live without worrying.”
There was a fine crack in John’s face. I pretended not to see it and continued.
“I wouldn’t work at night if I were a nanny. You should pay me overtime.”
“Night duty allowance. Okay, good. I’ll pay you a lot for your vacation.”
“Wait, what else do you want?”
I grinned.
“Haha. If it doesn’t work, there’s nothing I can do.”
John grumbled with a troubled face. I couldn’t stop laughing and gave a giggle. Okay. This isn’t too bat. What a good condition. If there were any problems, it would be seeing John’s grumpy face on a daily, but I should just avoid him properly.
“Okay. How long do I have to be a nanny?”
“Until Joshua doesn’t need you.”
That was an abstract answer. John added as if he had read my mind when he thought, “Surely you are not taking care of the child for your whole life.”
“Don’t worry. The child grows up very quickly. It won’t be long before we need a fake mother.”
I nodded my head up and down.
John then told me what I had to do in this mansion as a nanny. For example, Joshua called me mother, but I should never pretend to be a real mother. I was to never wander in the mansion… And the likes. Last, he asked me to use this room where we are now. Next to this room is Josh’s room. The requirements John gave was too harsh. I felt robbed of my freedom, but I nodded slightly. I’ll slowly expand my freedom and take advantage of this opportunity.
I answer, grabbing my stomach.
John took a long sigh with his forehead on my words. He said to himself, “My destiny is….” John then spat out a word with his troubled face.
Yeah, so what about my rice?
” Oh, that’s right. I didn’t say the most important thing.”
“Is there anything more important than rice?”
John stiffened his face and said something that had nothing to do with my question.
“Don’t ask questions about Joshua’s real mother.“
